An adult who can demonstrate that he/she cannot depend on their parents for subsistence will not be subject to the parental contribution.
This may include situations in which the parent’s identity is known but the parent-child relationship is severed, or the parent in question has never had custody of the child or the parent lives in another community or province and has no regular contact with the child. Alternatively, the parent may have addiction problems or may be incarcerated, or there may be a serious and ongoing conflict or disagreement, etc.
These situations must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and must be well documented.
