10.04.02 – SB – Victims of violence

Special monthly benefits of $100 shall be granted to a person who has taken refuge in a shelter for victims of violence commencing in the month of his or her admission regardless of time spent in the institution (minimum).

Shelters for victims of violence are organizations whose purpose is to provide temporary shelter, under the same roof, for adults and their children who are obliged to leave their home because of physical or emotional abuse.

Where beneficiaries do not have any lodging costs, assistance is reduced under the rules governing the housing test. Where these beneficiaries remain responsible for the payment of rent under a lease or a mortgage agreement, the cost of this obligation is considered in the housing test if they do not meet the payment . Moreover, SHARING A DWELLING DOES NOT APPLY to beneficiaries who take refuge in these shelters.

Proof of residence issued by the institution may be required to determine eligibility for this special benefit.

These persons are NOT SHELTERED and the normal rules apply, which means that:

  • DEPENDENT CHILDREN sheltered with their mother or father in such an institution are considered dependents of their mother or father;

  • where an AMOUNT is REQUIRED as board, it is treated as lodging costs;

  • if, at the time of separation, the claimant was a MEMBER OF A FAMILY that was already receiving assistance under a last resort financial assistance program, and where circumstances indicate an indefinite absence or separation, it is possible that two payments will be made to the same person in the same month, if complete destitution is determined.
