Special benefits are paid to cover the following costs for an adult:
- single return transportation required to take a seasonal or temporary job; the least expensive method of transportation must be used, bearing in mind all the circumstances;
OR
- the cost of a move required to take a job.
This special benefit is granted to cover the cost for each member of the family that has to move, up to a maximum of $250 per adult or dependent child. However, the maximum amount paid to a family for any 12-month period must not exceed $1,000.
This benefit is REDUCED by any amount paid by the employer. It is granted if the expected work income LESS allowable exemptions and deductions exceeds the eligible costs.
The need must be determined from the beneficiary’s statement and authorized beforehand. Real costs incurred will be reimbursed up to the maximum allowed.
An adult who abandons or loses a job in respect of which special benefits were paid to cover transportation costs to take a seasonal or temporary job or moving costs to take a job must PAY BACK the amount of the difference between the amount of this benefit and the income earned, from which the applicable exclusions or deductions are subtracted.
COST OF TRANSPORTATION TO TAKE A SEASONAL OR TEMPORARY JOB
Special benefits will cover roundtrip transportation. This involves the trip to the place of seasonal or temporary employment and the return trip when the season or temporary period ends. The place of employment must be such that the person is required to either temporarily leave his home or move.
COST OF MOVING TO TAKE A JOB
The cost of moving to take a job is covered even if the employment is seasonal or temporary. However, at the end of the seasonal or temporary employment, special benefits cannot be used to move again unless the adult has a new job that requires a move. The maximum of $1,000 per family per 12-month period applies.
