05.05.10 – Victims of crime compensation (IVAC) annuity

Prior to January 1, 2022, a victims of crime compensation annuity paid monthly to a mother for supporting a child born as a result of sexual assault was considered as income from the date it was received for the purpose of calculating Income Security Program benefits.

Effective January 1, 2022, financial assistance to support the needs of a dependent child born as a result of sexual assault received under the Act to assist persons who are victims of criminal offences and to facilitate their recovery, paid as a monthly annuity, shall be fully exempt as income for the purpose of calculating Income Security Program benefits.

The following are the annuity amounts based on the number of children:

(1) One child: $716.66

(2) Two children: $1,027.70

(3) Three children: $1,315.83

(4) Four children or more: $1,604.66

 

This type of financial assistance is available if, at the time of filing the application for assistance with IVAC, the child is a minor or 25 years of age or younger and a full-time student.

 

Where more than one person is supporting a child conceived as a result of sexual assault, the financial assistance provided shall be divided among them.

 

Financial support is paid on the first day of each month following the child's birth. It is paid retroactively if the application for financial assistance is made after the first month of the child's life.
