05.03.05 – Room and board income

Income from renting a room or providing board is included for calculation purposes, whether or not it is actually collected by the person.

Income from providing room or board is calculated as follows:

  • $125 for one person;
  • $50 for each additional person in the same household or family.

Note: It is not necessary for the persons to occupy the same room. The amount of $50 has to do with the family relationship, not the number of rooms that are occupied.

When rental income of this type begins or ends:

  • The calculation is performed proportionally, based on the number of real days of rental;
  • It is done on a daily basis and then converted to a monthly basis.

RENTAL INCOME FROM LIVING WITH ONE’S FATHER OR MOTHER

When a person is receiving a reduced basic benefit because he is living with his father or mother (family solidarity), part of the room or board income may be exempt, subject to certain conditions.

For more information about family solidarity, see 18.4.2.1

For more information about excluded room or board income, see 5.2.11
